Q&A with
Michael McHugh
What three famous people would you invite to a dinner party and why?
I’d love to talk to biochemist Jennifer Doudna, Renaissance Technologies hedge fund manager Jim Simons, and Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. They’re not traditional celebrities, but they’re my celebrities.
I feel these 3 people have a better grasp of what the world will look like by the year 2050 more than almost anybody else on the planet. Things that sound sci-fi today are going to be real life much faster than anybody expects.
What are some of your favorite things to do outside of work? Any hobbies?
I like to travel, read, and spend time outdoors, as all three of these provide opportunities to experience personal growth and learn more about the world we live in.
As an avid reader, I typically read 20 new books every year, mainly on topics related to business, finance, economics, and science. I’ve recently developed an appreciation for biology, astrophysics, and astronomy.
I’m an Eagle Scout and have camped in some of the most beautiful and brutal state and national parks in the United States. The Boy Scout motto is, “Be Prepared,” and I’ve learned to always prepare for the absolute worst weather each time and to view any decent conditions as a bonus.
In 2020, when we didn’t have much else to do during the pandemic, I learned the art of astronomy and stargazing and today can locate and name over 100 celestial objects in the night sky, including planets, stars, nebulae, and even the international space station – all without the use of a map or visual aid.
Learning the stars is like learning a language. Once you know how to read the alphabet, you can “read” the entire night sky as if it were all one book.
Travel is my greatest passion of all. I’ve been to more than 20 countries and 30+ US states – many of these too many times to count. Travel is one of the best ways to learn new things through unique experiences.
I like the thrill of getting out of my comfort zone and going places less commonly visited as it keeps things interesting when you don’t know what to expect! Some of these destinations include India, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Uzbekistan, Honduras, Bosnia, and Ukraine – just to name a few!
What is your proudest moment at BCR?
I’m most proud of the relationships I’ve built with my teammates and the substantial growth we’ve been able to achieve together. I strive to bring out the best in everyone and be an example of what an ideal teammate at this company looks like, helping in any way I can when others need me.
I also make it my mission to go above and beyond for our customers every day and view it especially important that we always respect their time and make them feel acknowledged and heard. They’re a priority, not an afterthought and that’s what separates us from the other roofing companies – there is still room to improve in this aspect in the construction industry and I like to add a retail touch to everything we do to deliver a positive experience.
